Cambodia Reduces Quarantine – Entry is getting easier…for some.

Unless you’ve been living under a rock you will have noticed that “Cambodia Reduces Quarantine” has been trending somewhat. The changes are intended to make it easier for specific business visitors to enter the Kingdom.

The changes do not have an impact on how that might affect your ability to nip out for a bit unless it becomes clearer that those currently here on business visas would also be granted shortened quarantines upon return. But for those dying to at least think about a jaunt beyond the border? Khmer Nights has the skinny on possible destinations for you…

Exactly what has been announced?

Vaccinated investors and business people with invitation letters traveling to Cambodia will now only have to endure a 3 day quarantine instead of the 14 day affair that has been in place for some time now. Unvaccinated business travellers will still be on the hook for the full 14 days.

As noted by the Cambodian Investment Review visitors will still have to obtain a visa to enter Cambodia with guarantees or invitation letters in hand from a local partner who is a properly registered, tax playing legal entity in Cambodia.

Does entry into Cambodia still require a $2000 deposit?

Yup..it sure does. No changes there but with the shorter quarantine period one would hope to see a larger refund than visitors under the 14 day regime were receiving.

Cambodia Reduces Quarantine? How do tourists fit into this change?

As of right now? They don’t. The changes are being made to get the folks with the money bags and promises of FDI into the country to spread some of that around, hopefully keeping hotels and restaurants busier as they do.

So, while this is obviously good news in the overall scheme of opening up the Kingdom, it is still a much more cautious approach than Thailand’s, which is planning to fully open to vaccinated tourists from 10 countries on November 1st

I am on a business visa, can I now travel abroad?

This is where the rules seem to be a little opaque to say the least. It would appear if you are legally employed by a Cambodian company and travel for business, then you would only need to quarantine for 3 days on your return to the country.

If though you have your own business visa and plan on a trip to Pattaya, you would theoretically need to do 7 days quarantine on your return. Although until more information is forthcoming the exact policy cannot be verified.

Why do I hear that the country will fully reopen on October 28th?

October 28th is the current date set for the entertainment ban to end. That might suggest that it is the “go-date” the government has pencilled in as a potential launch for re-opening in the “new normal”. As with all things pandemic related though, particulalry the dropping of all quarantine requirements for vaccinated tourists and biz types alike? We shall see.
