C-League Relegation Roundup

There were two corkers for the C-League relegation roundup this week. EDC FC surprisingly won away at Asia Euro United FC, with Police FC literally “robbing” poor Prey Veng on perhaps the worst pitch in the country, in two very contrasting matches and stadiums.

Asia Euro United only ended up in the relegation group on goal difference, so you’d expect them to be excelling in phase 2, but instead have now lost all of their playoff games so far.

EDC FC at AEU Sports Park

AEU were initially dominant, taking the lead through Nigerian forward Omkafe, but EDC, so often unlucky this season were to stage an amazing comeback, with star number 9 Sa Ty again setting the pace. EDC FC equalized through number 11 Sopheaktra, before two wonder goals by Sa Ty, the second of which resulted in him not only taking off his shirt, but throwing it to the ground in triumphant fashion, clearly relishing the inevitable yellow card that was to immediately. AEU were to pull one back, but it was to prove too little too late.

Of the two relegation matches, this was to prove the slightly more absurd of the two. Police FC,  National Police FC, National Police Commissary FC, or all of the above plus Military were formerly a force in the country, now not so much so. The club formerly played in Sihanoukville, but now play at the 7NG ”stadium”. It turns out it is less of a stadium and more a mud bath of a pitch, with seating for about 200 people and two portable toilets!

The worst pitch in Cambodia?

The match itself was a horrendous affair, with players slipping and sliding across the pitch and tempers regularly flaring up. The match was to see 5 yellow cards on the pitch, a red card for Police FC, as well as the home team getting booked. In the end though Police FC were to run out 2-0 winners, the first coming from a controversial penalty, with the second being a well taken goal near the end of the match. Poor Prey Veng can rightly feel hard done by after this result.

What does it mean?

In essence these were literally good results for everyone except Saltilo Angkor FC, the only team not to play. They now sit on a mere 5 points, 4 behind Prey Veng in 12th and seemingly destined for the drop. Sad not just for them, but also the rest of the league, as they actually have quite a nice stadium.
