Colum Curtis leaves Visakha FC by “mutual consent”

The news came about on Sunday, but it was only yesterday that Viskaha FC released any kind of comment, stating that the departure was by “mutual consent”, before further adding;

“We would like to thank Colum Curtis for his contributions to the club. We wish him success in his future career,”.

So far there has been no comment from the man himself, further adding to the intrigue of the whole affair.

Who is Colum Curtis?

Colum Curtis is a Northern Irish manager that played semi-pro football in Northern Ireland before coaching in the United States and then starting his managerial career in Cambodia. He was briefly manager of Svay Rieng FC, before taking up the reigns at high-spending Viskaha FC in 2019.

In the last two years he has been one of the most successful coaches in the country, winning the Hun Sen Cup for Visakha FC in 2020 (their first major honor), as well as finishing joint top during the first stage of the 2021 C-League season.

The team currently sit in 4th place, 3 points off of the top, but with a game in hand and have been in fine form of late. Until now the club have been firm favorites with many pundits to win the title this season, which has clearly raised the question “why now”?

Colum Curtis leaves Visakha FC – did he jump, or was he pushed?

The news has bewildered fellow managers, players and fans alike, with a leading member of the Blue Warriors – the official supporters club of Visakha telling Khmer Nights;

“None of us know why he left, or whether he was sacked, or quit. All we know is this is not very good news for the club at all”.

The Visakha,club website further added “If the club had anything to do with him leaving then this was clearly a very stupid move and may well cost us the title”.

What next for Visakha FC?

Visakha FC  have announced that assistant coach Akeeg Tunji Ayoyinka will become caretaker manager for the foreseeable future, assumedly until the end of the season at least.

As for their title bid? Colum Curtis had undoubtedly been a key catalyst in the recent success of Visakha FC,  his departure means the club have gone from title favorites to outsiders in the quest for the metfone C-League this year.
