Pong – The Best Breakfast muffin in Cambodia

The best breakfast muffin in Cambodia you ask? Pong Cambodia may have flown under radar to this  point, but the rapidly rising Cambodian food proprietors are carving out a niche for themselves as the kings of fast food breakfast dining.

Who are Pong Cambodia?

What’s the Pong story? Realizing there was no true indigenous Cambodian fast food outlet, Pong Cambodia opened their first branch in October of 2020. Pong literally means egg in Khmer, so the initial menu specialized in egg-based mouth-watering ‘sandgers’ made from scratch using freshly baked brioche, fresh eggs and a wide array of delicious fillings. Some of the standout dishes were their signature Avocado Bacon and Chicken Teriyaki.

What is a Sandger Cambodia?

What on earth though is a sandger? If you’ve got this far you may well be asking yourself what a sandger is, and this is a very valid question, but also one of the things that makes Pong so unique. Pong serve a dish that is nested in bread, like a sandwich, but is served hot and with the kind of filling you would expect to find in burger. Rather than give some kind of elaborate explanation, the entrepreneurial team simply decided to invent a new word to describe a new dish, the sandger, a combination of a sandwich and a burger. Now though it is the Pong Muffin and its four flavors that are making waves in the capital’s foodie culture.

So what is the story with the Pong Muffin? It comes in 4 flavors: Bacon and Egg, Egg and Sausage, Sausage, and the Deluxe Muffin. Now if these flavors or their appearance seem somewhat familiar, this is no accident. The founders were big fans of the McMuffin of McDonalds fame. Now unless you’ve been living under a rock you’ll be aware that there is no McDonalds in Cambodia and thus no McMuffin, so Pong took the initiative of importing some McMuffins, deconstructing them and rebuilding them to suit the local market.

The Pong Muffin vs the McMuffin. There are acute similarities, but also some wonderful differences. The Pong Muffin is made with softer bread making it less chewy and they have also used local seasonings to give it a very Khmer kick.
