Featured Destination – Wet Weekend Getaways in Kep
How’s about weekend getaways in Kep? At Khmer Nights we love nothing better than blowing away the cobwebs, turning off the laptop and getting as far away from Phnom Penh as possible! Well actually we prefer places less than 5 hours away that you can easily visit on a weekend.
So, what is a weekend getaway to Kep like during the rainy season? Khmer Nights went to explore.
How to get from Phnom Penh to Kep
If you have a vehicle then drive obviously! It takes less than 4 hours to ge to Kep depending on the traffic. A private car can be negotiated for $40-50, tr you can take the bus.
The buses are running on reduced capacity right now due to Covid-19, which means more space. Bus ticket is $8-10 depending on company and your luck. The buses to Kep all usually run through Kampot too if you happen to be heading there.

You can get dropped off in Kep Town, which is pointless, or by the beach, which with the rain is equally as pointless, but more pretty!
Where to Stay? Getaways in Kep
Kep beach is the happening part of town and there are places to lay your head for as little as 10 bucks. Do not use stuff like trip.com, or booking.com as the prices are considerably higher!
For $30 Khmer Nights relaxed at the 3 star Beach House Kep, which is a hotel, not a beach house. It is though a great place to watch the rain, which we will get to later!
What us there to do in Kep in the rainy season?
For the Brits out there think about a wet weekend in Margate, or Skegness and you will get the idea. There’s beach stuff to do, like boats and deck chairs, but done in the rain! It really did not seem to bother the locals at all, and we even saw saw beach soccer!

And of course there is Kep market aka the Crab Market,, probably the best street food in Cambodia, great no matter what the weather.
Khmer Nights – Nightlife of Kep
You know how Phnom Penh is like New York in that it is a city that never sleeps? Kep sleeps at about 8pm. There is a lot of street food by Kep beach, but eat before 8, or you will sure outta luck.
You options are then trying to find a tuk-tuk to one of the few bars, or talking your hotel into opening their bar. Worst case scenario get to the balcony with some Matrid Beer and watch the storm unfold!

Getting out of Kep
Kep even in the rain y season is worth a night, but two is stretching it a bit. If you need glitz, glamour, restaurants and even bars where gentlemen and ladies can meet then head Kampot on the way home to Phnom Penh.
Buses are few and far between and cost $4, or you can go Hollywood and get a TukTuk for $10-12. You will need to find these on the street, rather than using PassApp, the only app to actually work here.

Once in Kampot we suggest sticking to the city rather than anywhere by the river, with the roads out of town being screwed, some closed due to Covid and others showing genuine apathy to guests.
There’s always the pool at Onederz!
And that’s how you do weekend getaways in Kep in the rainy season, it might not be Ibiza, but it is also not Phnom Penh.
