Dengue Fever Brings the Heat Back to Phnom Penh After Nearly a Decade
The wait is over! Legendary Cambodian-American rock band Dengue Fever is set to make a triumphant return to the Kingdom for the first time since 2016. On Friday, March 21, 2025, fans will get the chance to experience the band’s infectious blend of psychedelic rock and Khmer musical influences at the open-air Chew & Bash rooftop on Phnom Penh Island Club, Koh Pich. This highly anticipated concert is expected to be one of the biggest music events of the year, and if you love live music, you won’t want to miss it!
A Homecoming for Dengue Fever
Dengue Fever has deep roots in Cambodia. The Los Angeles-based band, led by Khmer singer Chhom Nimol, draws heavily from the golden era of Cambodian rock from the 1960s and ‘70s. Their fusion of vintage Khmer pop with garage rock, surf, and world music has earned them a dedicated global following.
Discover Something Different in Cambodia
Keyboardist Ethan Holtzman recalls his first visit to Cambodia in 1998, where he discovered the unique blend of western psychedelic sounds with traditional Khmer music, a combination that would later inspire the formation of Dengue Fever. “Our starting point was this incredible music,” he explained, “and we’ve continued to build on it, creating our own unique sound.”
The band’s bassist, Senon Williams, reminisced about their early days performing in Phnom Penh. “Phnom Penh was the first place that Dengue Fever played outside of the U.S. It always feels like a homecoming when we return.”
A Stacked Lineup Featuring Japan Guitar Shop & DJ Larry Zinc
Joining Dengue Fever on this unforgettable night is Phnom Penh’s very own Japan Guitar Shop. Known for their dynamic blend of rock, blues, and hip-hop, the band is thrilled to share the stage with Dengue Fever. “One of our bandmates, Colin, was a fan of Dengue Fever long before he moved to Cambodia. We share many of the same musical influences, and getting to perform with them is a real honor,” the band shared. Japan Guitar Shop’s high-energy performance will set the stage for an electrifying night.
