“Previously we always held this event on a Monday morning while showing the live Oscars,” said Arthur. “But this year the Academy moved up the time of the show, so it wasn’t realistic to continue this way. We will have the same format with games and prizes; the only difference is that we will show clips of the Oscars highlights.”
About the Cambodia Oscar Selection Committee
The Cambodia Oscar Selection Committee was originally part of the Film Cambodia Organization (FCO), which became a local NGO registered with the Ministry of Interior on January 2, 2008. It was conceived in March 2006 when Mariam Arthur approached Cambodia’s Department of Cinema and Cultural Diffusion about helping develop the Khmer film industry.
Arthur returned to the United States to spend a year researching and planning a strategy. She came back to Phnom Penh in April 2007 and began meeting both Khmer and foreign film professionals, such as those at Bophana Audiovisual Center, Hanuman Films, and Hang Meas, as well as government officials. The first newsletter, Mise en Scene, was published in June 2007.
In 2024, COSC applied for recognition as its own local NGO with President Cecile Malterre, Vice President Kem Sokhak, Technician In Peth, and Administrator Mariam Arthur.
This event is more than just a party—it’s a celebration of Cambodia’s growing film industry and the creative minds working to bring local stories to the world stage. So, gather your friends, dress to impress, and raise a glass to cinema at The Birdcage Boutique this Friday night.
