HSC Round Up: Halfway Stage.

HSC Round Up: Halfway Stage.

Tournament Format…..

There are 21 entries from provinces all over Cambodia with Koh Rong, Kampot, Kratie & Ratanakiri the 4 that haven’t entered this year. The 21 provinces are split into 7 groups of 3 based on location. A round robin is played between the 3 teams both home and away totaling 4 games each. The top team from each group and the best runner up will progress to the Quarter Finals (2 legs), Semi finals (2legs) and then the preliminary final is played in Phnom Penh at the national stadium.

The top 5 teams then join with the 11 pro clubs to create a round of 16 and play two legs all the way to the final. This is regarded as the showpiece event of the year much like the FA Cup in England.

The Group’s…..

Group A sees Phnom Penh Galaxy, Kampong Speu & Kampong Chhnang. Group B brings together Takeo, Shianoukville & Kep whilst Group C has Svay Rieng, Prey Veng & Kandal. Group D covers the west side of the country with Pursat, Pailin & Battembang then we have, close to them, Group E which is Lion King (Siem Reap), Banteay and Oddar Meanchey. Group F goes north with Prea Vihear, Stung Treng & Kampong Thom and then finally we have Group G with defending champions Kampong Chhnam, Mondulkiri and Tbong Khnum.

HSC Round Up: Halfway Stage.

Lion King & Svay Rieng maintain 100% record…

We start in Group C where Svay Rieng have opened their season with two wins from two. A comfortable 3-1 over Kandal was followed up with a hard earned 3-2 victory over Prey Veng. Kandal smashed Prey Veng 5-1 in the other game in the group.

Svay Rieng 6, Kandal 3, Prey Veng 0.

In Group E, Lion King came from behind against BMC to win 4-1. They’re getting into the habit of grinding teams down without really impressing. OMC and BMC played out a seven goal thriller with OMC winning 5-2.

Lion King 6, OMC 3, BMC 0.

Group A is finely balanced with all three teams winning one and losing one. Phnom Penh Galaxy lost their opening game 4-1 to Kampong Chang then bounced back with a 3-1 win over Kampong Speu.

PP Galaxy 3, Kampong Speu 3, Kampong Cham 3.

Group B, covering the south, is a two horse race between Kep & Shianoukville. Kep overcame their title rivals with a 1-0 win but then faltered with a disappointing draw in Takeo. Shianoukville made hard work of their win against Takeo coming from behind to win 3-2.

Kep 4, Shianoukville 3, Takeo 1.

Group D is going to go to the wire with any of the 3 teams more than capable of winning this. Pursat opened with a 3-0 win in Pailin. They followed that up with a 1-1 draw at home to Battembang. Pailin bounced back from their defeat to beat Battembang 2-1. This means the group favorites Battembang are currently bottom.

Pursat 4, Pailin 3, Battembang 1.

Group F will also go to the wire with all three teams able to compete. Preah Vihear lead the way with a win and draw from their first two games. A 3-0 win over Stung Treng then a 1-1 draw with Kampong Thom. Stung Treng showed massive improvement from their opening game defeat coming from behind to draw 1-1 with Kampong Thom.

Preah Vihear 4, Kampong Thom 2, Stung Treng 1.

In Group G we’re a game behind with two heavyweights set to go head to head this weekend. Defending champions Kampong Chhnam opened with a 3-0 win over Mondulkiri but challengers Tbong Khnum replied by beating Mondulkiri 7-0. Kampong Chhnam and Tbong Khnum go head to head this weekend.

Tbong Khnum 3, Kampong Chhnam 3, Mondulkiri 0
