Take A Cultural Journey With Phoum Chaufea Resort

We heard that Phoum Chaufea Resort is more than just a place, it’s a living representation of Khmer heritage, crafted to preserve the essence of traditional Cambodian art, architecture, and culture. Not to mention, it is fast gaining popularity despite only being open for just over a year.

Naturally, we had to catch up with Sokmean Kheam, the CEO of Phoum Chaufea, to learn more about this cultural retreat located in Siem Reap.

“We are dedicated to preserving the essence of Khmer art and culture,” Sokmean explains. “Phoum Chaufea is a living representation of the authentic Khmer way of life, embodied in 13 traditional houses.

Each one is named after a Monkey Commander, a character from Reamker, one of Cambodia’s most famous literary works. Alongside this, we operate Moha Chumpou Restaurant & Bar, where we introduce both Khmer cuisine and global dishes to our guests who visit from all around the world.”

Building A Bright Future

Though Phoum Chaufea has only been operational for half a year, it is already making a mark on Cambodia’s cultural tourism scene. Sokmean shares the long-term vision for the project:

“We aim to be one of the best historical sites in Siem Reap, a must-visit destination for those who want to explore Cambodian culture and experience living in traditional Khmer houses. Our dream is for Phoum Chaufea to become a hub where visitors can dive deep into Cambodia’s heritage.”

Looking ahead, Sokmean envisions further development, including more cultural events and activities that will highlight both the history and the future of Khmer traditions.

When asked what makes Phoum Chaufea stand out, Sokmean is clear: “The best thing about our service is how we preserve and showcase the uniqueness of Khmer art and culture. From our courtesy to our services, everything is aligned with Khmer customs and traditions. We are proud to represent and safeguard these ancient ways of life for future generations.”

Phoum Chaufea doesn’t just offer a physical space, but a holistic experience of Khmer hospitality, culture, and history.

A Unique Khmer Experience: Supporting Local

“We are unique because of our Khmer architectural buildings, each designed to follow the circle of time from left to right,” Sokmean continues. “Each house offers a different experience, and all are named after the 12 Monkey Commanders from the Reamker epic. This connection to our literary heritage, combined with the architectural design, creates an exceptional cultural journey for our visitors.”

This thoughtful layout ensures that guests not only enjoy the aesthetic beauty of the houses but also engage with the cultural stories behind them.

Sokmean is passionate about how Phoum Chaufea contributes to both the preservation of Khmer traditions and the local economy: “We retain the key to discovering ancient Khmer art and culture. From the details of everyday life to the traditional ambiance of a Khmer village, we offer an authentic experience. In addition to presenting the Khmer empire, we also operate a fine dining service, Moha Chumpou, where we serve authentic Khmer culinary masterpieces using local ingredients—many of which come from our own garden.”

By showcasing local cuisine and products, Phoum Chaufea supports local farmers and artisans, ensuring that the community benefits from its success.

A Proud Heritage

Sokmean’s passion for his work is evident in every detail of Phoum Chaufea. “We, the next generation of Khmer people, are committed to preserving our art and culture.
