2022 Hun Sen Cup kicks off tomorrow

The competitive football season will officially kick-off tomorrow with the start of the 2022 Hun Sen Cup and yes Khmer Nights will be there to cover it.

What is the 2022 Hun Sen Cup?

The Hun Sen Cup is the national knockout competition for Cambodian football and as well as featuring professional sides in the later rounds it also includes junior, regional, amateur and semipro teams from throughout the country.

Preliminary round of the 2022 Hun Sen Cup

The country’s clubs are geographically drawn together into regional leagues. The winners then pass through to the regional cup final, before they get a chance to play the big-boys in the later rounds. Most of them get spanked at this stage but at least that means a day out in the capital city for them.

All in all, it’s a great way to spot new talent as only a limited number of over 23 players allowed to compete in games.

Who is playing on February 8th?

Sihanoukville Province vs Kampot Province

Kampong Speu Province vs Takeo Province

Phnom Penh Galaxy FC vs Svay Rieng Province

Kandal Province vs Kampong Cham Province

Who is playing on February 9th

Rithsen FC vs Oddar Meanchey Province

Battambang Province vs Pailin Province

Kampong Thom Province vs Ratanakiri Province

Preah Vihear Province vs Mondulkiri Province

What’s the standard of play?

As you might expect, the Cup is not exactly at the standard of the Cambodian Premier League. You can suss out junior provincial sides by their having a “province” designation. Teams with t FC note don theri names are more professional.

That said? Khmer Nights will be sampling the joys of Sihanoukville Province vs Kampot Province, so regardless of the quality of the game there will be a day at the seaside!
